Bescot ... We were going to keep the origins of the company's name a carefully-guarded secret, but
since everyone asks -- and they usually end up looking the name up on Wikipedia -- we thought we'd tell
you up front!
When Martin studied for his MBA at the Schulich School of Business at York University, there were a
number of courses where fictitious names for business' were needed. During an entrepreneurial course,
he had to present a business plan for a company of his own that he would like to set up.
Martin, with his background in marketing and brand Positioning, wanted to come up with a word that was
short, easy to remember, and that did not immediately have a meaning to his customers.
After a number of aborted name tries, he drew -- from his childhood -- the name "Bescot".
As a young boy growing up in the UK, Martin was fortunate enough to be taken by his family -- everyone
took turns -- to a local football team (soccer for North Americans): Walsall Football Club.
At the time, they played on a ground called Fellows Park, but now they play in a relatively new stadium
in a suburb of Walsall called --- you guessed it! -- "Bescot." The ground has now been named
"Banks's Stadium."
Hence, the name has stuck -- from Martin's planning days in business school, right up to the present
day, as a new, growing company.
Now you know!
