
Alan graduated with a Joint Honours B.Sc. in Physiology & Pharmacology from Manchester University and a
Ph.D. in Neurochemistry from the University of Southampton, England before coming to Canada in 1980 for a
Postdoctoral Fellowship and an Assistant Professorship in the Departments of Pharmacology & Psychiatry at
the University of Toronto.
In 1983, he joined Boehringer Ingelheim, and then in 1985, he started up Beecham Clinical Pharmacology --
which subsequently merged to form SmithKline Beecham. During that time, Canada was recognized as one of the
top global recruiting clinical research sites. From 1985 to 1994, Alan was responsible for many different
management roles, including clinical, regulatory, quality affairs, government affairs, outcomes research,
and vaccines marketing & sales.
In 1995, Alan worked in Philadelphia for 12 months at a start-up operation for disease management services,
before moving to Novo Nordisk Canada in 1996. There, in collaboration with Martin, they gained approval &
launched a number of products in the diabetes, womens' healthcare and haematology therapeutic areas. He also
gained an MBA from the Schulich School of Business, University of York, Ontario.
Prior to joining Bescot Healthcare, Alan was Vice-President, Medical & Scientific Affairs at Nycomed
Canada (formerly ALTANA), having moved there in 2004. During that time, ALTANA Canada was the top recruiting
affiliate for clinical trials and Alan was instrumental in establishing the Pipeline Sourcing function for
Nycomed in Canada, searching for early stage in-licensing opportunities.
